Two Poles in the quarter-finals. Pieczonka the surprise of Thursday

Thursday closed the second round of the main draw and the doubles quarter-finals. Two Poles will play in Friday’s singles quarter-finals: Daniel Michalski and Filip Pieczonka.

Michalski, the top seed and the champion from two years ago, gave Jan Wygona no chance. Pieczonka, until earlier this year a player of AZS Poznań, came through a three-set match against the third seed Prihodko and is the biggest surprise of the day.

Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutyński will not defend his title. Last year’s champion lost to Germany’s Guttau after a second-set tie-break. Borys Zgoła also went out, having played two closely fought matches on the same day — in singles and in doubles — and lost both.

A Polish pair is already certain of a place in the doubles final. One semi-final brings together Piotr Matuszewski with Jan Werbliński and Chłodnicki with Sterniczuk, the other pits two foreign pairs against each other. Chłodnicki and Sterniczuk advanced by walkover — the second seeds Orlov and Pereira did not take to the court.

Every match today was of a very high standard, with plenty of interesting rallies. The weather held and so did the atmosphere. It is worth coming down to watch.

On Friday play begins at 10:00. Michalski takes the court in the second match of the day, Pieczonka in the third. The day closes with an all-Polish doubles semi-final.
