Match of the day: Szajrych – Sadzik

The tightest match was an all-Polish affair. Poznań's Jasza Szajrych faced the Kraków junior Jan Sadzik, who had entered the draw on a wild card. Sadzik took the first set 6-4, Szajrych answered 6-3, and the place in the next round was decided by a third-set tie-break, won 7-4.

Two seeds out

The first round cost the tournament two seeded players, and in both cases the culprits were qualifiers. Karlis Ozolins gave the fifth seed Oleksii Krutykh only three games, winning 6-3 6-0. Jan Hrazdil beat the seventh seed Tomasz Berkieta – the Pole retired after losing the second set.

Martyn Pawelski also failed to finish his match, withdrawing after the first set against Igor Gimenez.

The qualifiers showed character

Of the eight players who came through qualifying, three won their first-round match: Bojarski, Ozolins and Hrazdil. Tom Zeuch, who entered the draw as a lucky loser, added a fourth, beating Diego Barreto Sanchez in three sets.
